Ahhhhhhhh!!!

Something awesome happened today.  And when I say awesome, I mean awesome.  Before you read this, please remember that I am - in many ways - a very simple creature.  It just doesn't take all that much to make me happy.  And tonight, I'm happy.

See, we closed on our new house - and moved into it - three weeks ago today.  We had ordered our washer and dryer two weeks before that.  (Because no one in podunk-Alaska keeps a pile of appliances in stock, apparently.)  My very first set of front-loaders.  I was so very excited.  I must be moving up in the world, I thought!  Fancy appliances!

They were supposed to be in about a week after we moved in.  Sure, a week with no washer and dryer, that's doable.  We decided we'd just wash everything we owned before we moved and that should get us through one little week.  And if it didn't, there was always the ol' laundromat.

Imagine my surprise when the washer showed up the day after we moved.  Sweet, we can wash clothes after all!  Except... no dryer.  Its ETA was the 27th.  Ehh, not ideal, but again, minor inconvenience.  Right?

Wrong.

The trouble with having a brand new washer (that you paid a lot of money for) is that suddenly you feel like going to the laundromat is a total waste of money.  After all, you have a perfectly good washer right in your house.  But then, who wants to lug wet clothes to the laundromat to just dry them?  Yeah, me either.

And so began our quest to find places in our (still almost empty) house to hang clothes to dry.  We ended up buying a drying rack, which of course is not big enough for the giant sized load of clothes the new washer will handle.  Not really even half a load.  So then we started making use of the baby cage too.  Then we expanded to shower curtain rods and closet rods.  Then draping undies and socks over hangers in our closets.  Our new house started to look like a homeless camp, with 3000 socks hanging everywhere.  It was really annoying.

The 27th came and went; no dryer.  We started to grow tired of wearing 'crunchy' socks and underwear.  Our jeans and shirts hung off of us as if we'd lost catastrophic amounts of weight overnight.  (The problem with this is two-fold.  One, you look like a slob.  And two, you start feeling pretty great about yourself since all your clothes are baggy.  "This is great, I must have lost 15 pounds since Tuesday!"  Except, no, you haven't.

Another week passed and finally the phone call came.  Hooray!  A dryer!

"We'll be over tomorrow between 1 and 4 to drop it off."  Perfect.  The hubby and I made arrangements to be ready to drop everything at work when they called to say they were on their way.

Except they never called.  Here I was, all excited about having a dryer after three weeks of crunchy underwear, and the jerkfaces didn't show up.  The nerve!!  LONG story short, they were attempting to call us on our old, you know, disconnected phone number.  I have no idea why; I gave them both our new number and my cell number at least three times.  Who knows.  Who cares.  What's one more day with no dryer?

Today, at 10:30, the call finally came!  I met the delivery guy at the house (did you know that Tommy Chong has a white twin in Alaska?) and finally got my dryer.  When I got home from work I launched into a flurry of laundry the likes of which I haven't seen since... well, never.  I got four huge loads done and am now waiting for the last one to dry so I can crawl in bed.  (Okay, I didn't get to the sheets, but tomorrow night I can look forward to that.)

Tomorrow I will have nice, soft, well-fitting clothing to wear for the first time in almost a month.  I'm nearly giddy about this.

I told you I was easy to please.

Broken down or missing appliances can be soooo stressful. It's not a small thing at all to celebrate having a dryer. I went through a week or so last year without an oven and I was going insane.

A tip if you ever find yourself without a dryer again... liquid fabric softener. We hang almost all of our clothes to dry and never get that awful crunchiness.

Looks mighty similar to our new Samsung front loads we got a few months ago. I often use the Quick Wash feature, but I have discovered the dryer works best over on the sense dry side. It does a SUPER job of removing lint so make sure you check the tube/vent to the outside often as mine were clogged quickly!

Yeah for non-crunchy clothes :) I have lived through the "had a working washer but no dryer" thing and it takes patience! PLUS a lot of laundromats (believe me I know from experience) technically do not allow you to dry wet/washed clothes there if you did not wash them there. I've had laundromat attendants "sternly" point this out to me (what?! i'm still paying five quarters a load to dry em!) So, congrats :)

New dryer, YAY!!! :) I hate the crunch clothes feeling, too! Although, hubby wants all of his shirts to hang dry. So we end up with shirts hung all over the pantry! A n n o y i n g!
I'm so glad things are finally settling down for y'all. What a stressful summer! You'll have to post pics of Aiden in his new home soon!
Ooo, I just saw the liquid fabric softener tip in the first comment. Why didn't I ever think of that? Like, years ago??
